NEW DELHI: With the arrest of three men, a gang of thieves who used to target ATMs and escape with the stolen money has been busted. The trio was arrested following a brief exchange of fire, senior police officers said.
The arrested men have been identified as Sahib (22), Abid (20) and Shakil (20) — all residents of Mewat in Haryana.
According to the police, on Friday, a team of Samaypur Badli police station received information that a suspected gang of ATM robbers from Mewat would visit Badli industrial area.
“Based on the tip-off, our team laid a trap near Canal Road running from Badli industrial area towards Khera Kalan. The suspects were intercepted as soon as they were seen coming from the industrial area. On seeing the police team, one of the accused namely Sahib opened fire on police personnel. He fired one round from his pistol and all of them tried to flee. In retaliation, the police party, in order to restrain the activity of accused persons and to stop them from fleeing, fired three rounds. One of the bullets hit accused Sahib on his right leg and he was overpowered. His other two accomplices — Abid and Shakil — were alsocaught,” said Brijendra Kumar Yadav, DCP, Outer North. Following their search,the pistol was recovered. “Sahib was taken to a hospitalwhere he is undergoing treatment. They have all been booked under relevant sections. Cops are interrogating themto unveil their past criminalactivities,” the officer said. During interrogation,the accused revealed thatthey had come to conduct arecce of an ATM.
